Asset Building

YMCA Education and Training provides people of all ages and backgrounds with the skills, training and experience to help them achieve their potential through education and skill development.

ADDRESSING ISSUES:

Elementary education forms the foundation for gaining basic knowledge without which the dream of children will become impossible. Elementary education can be compared to the first stride that a person takes in life, it is impossible for people to run without first learning how they can walk (Long, 2000).

Partnering with schools to provide a caring adult directly in the schools provides students with more opportunities for building positive relationships, reinforcing social skills and problem solving, and receiving intervention and support as needed.

A community youth worker supports students to attain maximum benefits from their school programs by removing barriers to education and collaborating in healthy social development in a safe and supportive environment. These types of supports give students more opportunities to develop the skills to practice healthy behaviours, make positive choices, and strengthen their resiliency skills so that they are prepared for life's challenges.

WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT:

Working in partnership with Holy Trinity Catholic School Division, a youth worker provides support to elementary school aged children to explore resources and skills for school success.

Prevention supports can include accommodations, problem solving, and facilitation of group instruction to students in self-regulation, friendship skills, and coping skills. Supports are provided to schools and families of children through resources, support and information.

The Developmental Assets® are 40 research-based, positive experiences and qualities that influence young people's development, helping them become caring, responsible, and productive adults.
