Hours:  Monday to Friday (split shift:  615am-915am and/or  3pm-6pm or 8 hour days on non-school days)

Nature & Scope

The primary focus of this position will be to ensure children and youth are provided with a variety of age appropriate activities/programming that supports their positive growth in spirit, mind and body. School Age Program Leaders are directly responsible for delivering fun, safe and positive experiences for groups of 8 – 15 children aged 6-12 years.  Additionally, they must be able to develop a program curriculum that includes, but is not limited to themed programs, creative movement, literacy, and sports-based programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • To be available for work during before or after school hours, on non-school days, school breaks and early dismissal days.
  • To greet each participant and their parent(s) courteously using names whenever possible.
  • To recognize new participants and to be accessible to parents and participants to answer questions and respond to concerns.
  • To be available to consistently lead all programs assigned.
  • To be able to create and adapt plans appropriate to the program, skill level and age of the participants.
  • To be responsible for the safety and security of all participants in your care, at all times following the YMCA policies and procedures.
  • To keep program areas clean, organized, and safe for everyone’s use checking for potential health and safety hazards at all times and completing incident reports when necessary.
  • To deal with any emergency situations that arise, following the YMCA policies.
  • To interact with the children in a positive and supportive manner, taking into consideration each participant’s uniqueness.
  • To develop positive relationships with children, staff members and volunteers, while always displaying a professional image.
  • To ensure that all relevant information is shared with the appropriate members of the program team.
  • To adhere to all YMCA child protection policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with YMCA policies and procedures.
    Coaching and Development: Commits to assisting participants, volunteers, staff and self in continuous learning and development.
    Leadership: Motivates and inspires self and others to take action to achieve desired outcomes.
    Creativity and Innovation: Develops new ways or adapts existing ideas to help us achieve desired results. Challenges the status quo to discover more effective ways of performing and learning.

    Self-Management: Works independently within prescribed parameters, can discern the relevance of issues and communicate effectively to the Supervisor of School Age Services & Manager of School Age Services.
    Initiative: Has the ability to be self-directed and complete tasks without being asked.  Can direct and engage children when scheduled programming or activities encounter unforeseen circumstances that affect the outcome.
    Communication Skills:  The candidate will be required to communicate with children, parents and other staff in a professional and welcoming manner.  They will have the ability to speak to and instruct groups of children in a manner that engages their participation and plan activities that are based on the children's interests.
    Organizational Skills:  The candidate will be required to plan and deliver a variety of programs, track attendances and registration statistics.
    Computer Skills: The candidate will be efficient in using Microsoft Office software.
    Time Management: The candidate must be able to multi-task efficiently manage time and duties.
    Qualifications & Requirements
  • 1-2 years of Experience working with children and youth
  • A valid class 5 license
  • Experience with program development is an asset
  • Current First Aid and CPR Level C
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Search (issued no later than 6 months preceding your start date) before their start date.
